The Royal ShakespeareTheatre is in many ways the bastion of Shakespeare’s legacy in Stratford. A giant in stature and capacity, seating over 1,000 people, the theatre is home to the Royal ShakespeareCompany – a British institution of the theatre world renowned for its continuing renditions ofShakespeare’s classics.
Ifit’shistory, rather than theatre, that interests you thenwhy not visitthe 16thcentury, half-timbered house in the town centre believed to be the spot where Shakespeare was born in 1564? It is truly a mecca for all lovers of literature. In fact, the town remains aunique place because it exhibits so many 16thand 17thcenturyhouses, containing numerous artefactsof theShakespearean age. Halls Croft, the building owned by Shakespeare’s daughter,andHarvard House or Anne Hathaway’s house are both timestamps of the Tudor era, with visible timber framingonthe exterior, sotypicalof the times.
Yet if you have somehow stumbled into Stratford-upon-Avonwith no interest in the theatre, do not fear! CloptonBridge, with its 14 pointed arches spanningthe River Avon, is a sight to behold. OrHoly Trinity Church, whichfound fame asthe place of baptism, marriage and burial of Shakespeare (sorry there’s no escape!),anddates back to the 13thcentury.
